Convalescing

First sick leave taken for the year. An achievement given that I literally bulldozed through January in a healthy state. Was looking at my average MCs taken last year and found that I took approximately 1 MC per month. Hmm. Very interesting.

Anyway, I'm down with tonsillitis and recovering from a fever caused by my throat inflammation. Haven't had fever for so long I forgot how it felt. Thankful for my buddy at work who is holding the fort while I'm resting. And really helpful to have Nick by my side when my body refuses to cooperate.

Not one to be okay about falling sick. Most of the time I can be in denial until the diagnosis is made and I don't have a choice but to admit that I need to rest.

I'm a little stubborn that way.

Had a really bad dream (probably cos I'm sick) and was woken up by a coughing fit. And secretly relieved to see Nick already awake and glancing at me while patting the chest to comfort my coughiness.

Came across this article on Facebook from ThoughtCatalog. Felt a strong emotion tug at my heart and knew I somehow had to archive this.

How The People We Once Loved Become Strangers Again

FEB. 19, 2014 By BRIANNA WIEST
It’s interesting to think about how we make people who used to be everything into nothing again. How we learn to forget. How we force forgetting. What we put in place of them in the interim. The dynamics afterward always tell you more than what the relationship did — grief is a faster teacher than joy – but what does it mean when you cycle out to being strangers again? Because you never really stop knowing each other in that way. Maybe there’s no choice but to make them someone different in your mind, not the person who knew your daily anxieties and what you looked like naked and what made you cry and how much you loved them.

When our lives revolve around someone, they don’t just stop revolving around them even if all that’s left is the grief and pain that comes with their memory. Because you loved them, there will always be parts of them that linger. The memories that are impressed on the places you went and the things you said and the songs you listened to will remain. We all eventually find ourselves standing in the checkout line, hearing one of those songs come on and realizing that all of a sudden, we’re revolving around them again. And maybe we never stopped.

Do you ever really forget your lovers’ birthdays, or all your first times, intimate and not? Do your anniversaries ever become normal days of the year again? Are the things you did and promises you made ever really neutralized? Do they become void now that you’re broken up or do you decidedly ignore them because there’s simply no other choice? The mind tells you to go on, and forces your heart to follow suit I guess.

I want to believe that you either love someone, in some way, forever, or you never really loved them at all. That once two reactive chemicals cross both are changed. That the wounds we leave in people are sometimes too raw to risk falling back into them. I don’t want to believe that we write each other off because we simply don’t matter anymore. I know love isn’t expendable. I wonder, and maybe hope, if we ever just force it to be out of that necessity.

Maybe it’s just that we’re all at the centers of our own little universes, and sometimes they overlap with other people’s, and that small bit of intersection leaves some part of it changed; that’s where we grow together. The collision can wreck us, change us, shift us; sometimes we become eternally undetachable and connected and other times we decidedly move away because the change required to accept another person’s universe colliding with yours is a safety we don’t want to leave. Either way, it’s inevitable that your universe expands. That you’re left knowing that much more about love and what it can do, and the pain that only a hole in your heart can bring. Whether or not that hole will ever again include the person who made it that way, that’s for you to decide.

We all start as strangers. The choices we make in terms of love are usually ones that seem inevitable anyway. We find people irrationally compelling. We find souls made of the same stuff ours are. We find classmates and partners and neighbors and family friends and cousins and sisters and our lives intersect in a way that makes them feel like they couldn’t have ever been separate. And this is lovely. But the ease and access isn’t what we crave. It isn’t what I’m writing about right now. It isn’t what we revolve around after it’s gone. We are all just waiting for another universe to collide with ours, to change what we can’t ourselves. To fill us, to make us whole. It’s interesting how afterwards, we realize that the storm returns to calm, but the stars are always changed and we don’t choose whose collisions change us. We all start as strangers. But we forget that often, the only thing we do choose is who ends up a stranger too.

Good guys finish first ♥

I could have written this myself when I saw it on thoughtcatalog.com, and found it super relatable in every sense of the word:

1) I'm not that girl who dates bad boys.

2) Also, people used to call me sweet but not anymore.

3) I'm not interested to fix or change anyone.

4) Lastly, I'm all in for the long haul.

On Dating Good Guys

JUL. 18, 2011

There seems to be this undercurrent of asshole-loving lately; my peers justifying their ill-advised decision to partner with people they believe can and will ‘change.’ I’m all about personal preference, but it seems that while the Nice Guy/Asshole debate rages on, no one has stood up for the Good Guys.

When I was younger (whatever age you are when people actually sign yearbooks), there was this one descriptor that people always included when signing my autograph book or what-have-you. ‘Sweet.’ “Stay sweet, Stephanie,” or “You’re such a sweet girl.” It’s funny; I don’t think anyone has called me ‘sweet’ since I was thirteen, probably – but at the time, it was a recurring theme. I was sweet.

I don’t believe I’m inherently ‘unsweetened’ now, but I’ve developed somewhat of an acerbic tinge. I won’t shy away from expressing my opinion (unless I’ve predetermined that my opponent will likely refer to out-of-context talking points that they picked up from Rush Limbaugh – in that case, I won’t waste my breath). I am a master of dirty looks, the silent treatment, and making apparent when someone’s actions are unacceptable. I can, at times, be a raging bitch.

These two polarizing aspects of my personality (along with many others) coexist peaceably. I try to be thoughtful, I do nice things for other people because I want to, I am genuine when expressing emotion (OMG I know, earnestness, gross!). But I also won’t take your crap, and if you give me enough of it, I will peace out of your life and I will not regret it. Count on that. I am capable of being a warm blanket of golden light, but I’m also capable of being a laser beam that will effing cut you. In other words, I am the nice guy. And I am the asshole. We all are, to some degree.

Which is why, when given the choice, I want to date a Good Guy. I want someone who is a real, flawed human being – someone who, despite those flaws, makes the conscious, ongoing effort to act benevolently toward the people around him. Because there is no such thing as An Asshole and A Nice Guy and if that’s all we can say about these people, what they really are is An Actor. A one-dimensional character whose actions are motivated by the desire to project a controlled, steadfast image to the world.

I do not want to fix someone. I’m too busy working on myself. I wouldn’t want to date someone who isn’t doing the same, who doesn’t see the value in growth. I’m not here to hold someone’s hand while they learn how to grow up. I’m not a pre-school teacher; I’m not a therapist. A man is not an art project to be cut up into little pieces and glued back together. You’re your own fixer-upper, honey; do with that what you will.

I want to be with someone who respects me, someone who I can respect. I do not want to tote around some unruly asshole, a discount handbag that looks impressive on the outside but is really falling apart at the seams. This would be a reflection of my own bad taste and insecurity, dating some mess of a person who doesn’t use the words, ‘Please’ and ‘Thank You,’ someone who has no consideration for other people. I don’t want to introduce that person to my friends, or to my family – who all happen to be Good People who have a low tolerance for assholes.

I don’t want to date someone indifferent to themselves or to me. Is it an oddity that I don’t want to be treated like crap? I do not have time to hopelessly await someone’s phone call; I do not have time to place heaps of unwarranted blame on myself when someone or something seemingly ‘disappears.’ I don’t have the time to jump through hoops to prove that I am worthy of someone’s affections, and even if I did have the time? That’s not how I would spend it.

No, I want a Good Guy – someone who is a good person before I date him, while I date him, and after I date him. Someone who is capable of letting go of whatever Grave Injustices were done to him, who doesn’t blame the world for his misfortunes. Someone who respects himself, who wants to be with someone who will treat him the way he deserves to be treated. Someone who is nice but not a doormat, someone who is confident but not an asshole. Someone who gets to date a Good Person by being one, not by appealing to a girl’s desire to ‘fix’ their self-perpetuated damage.

So, to the ladies who want assholes, keep them. I’ll take the sane, emotionally stable man any day.

A note on love

Came across this quote which I think describes how I feel towards the one I love.

I confess I don't know much about my boyfriend at all. I think I do but honestly I don't. At least not fully well. It's fascinating to know about his thoughts on different days because they do evolve and aren't always the same.

I don't think it's possible to know someone entirely because change is constant. Therefore it fascinates me to find out more about the one I love. Most importantly, not to be complacent. :)

A case of robbery and logic

A recent snatch thief news reported in my residence caught the boyfriend's eager eyes.

I was heading home on my own after hanging out at Nick's today and insisted he sends me no further than the traffic junction so he can rest before burning Saturday working again. I requested, no, implored that he sleep first.

He uttered, "I will wait for you to get home first."

"Oh cos' of the robbery? If I'm really robbed there's nothing you can do about it.", I shrugged, conscious of the truth behind my statement.

He simply stated "I can call the police."

I had a good laugh at his cool joke.

What a silly boyfriend.

Here's to the man I adore!

An act of love

Caught in a rather awkward situation, something sweet slipped out of N's trap.

"You know I'll always protect you right?"

Now I do. :)

Cheeky love

Another quote from the vineyard,

Me: Tell me one thing you never would have told me otherwise.

N: Our picture is set as the wallpaper at work.

Happy sighs. I love this man-boy. :)
